Narrative
Phyllis Ann SENCER was born on 20 Nov 1941 at 2:50 at Brooklyn Jewish Hospital, 555 Prospect Pl, Brooklyn, NY. The Doctor was Sarah K. Greenberg, and the Nurse was Mrs. Waters.107 Rose (née KAPLAN) SENCER chose the name for her mother, Fannie (née ROSEN) Kaplan, and her best friend, Ann Kresge.111

According to a conversation related by Patricia Caren SENCER M.D. (Patricia PADLIPSKY) from Phyllis’s mother, Beverly Barbara WEISSMAN (Beverly SENCER), Phyllis had a brain tumor. As of 1949, she was a patient at the Fairview School for Mentally Defective Children, where she passed away on 9 Jun 1950 at the age of 8.

Blanche C. Lightowler was one of the directors of the Fairview School in Fishkill (where Phyllis was in 1950), then moved to Arizona and opened another school for the “mentally defective” with her son, Matthew: the “Hobby Horse Ranch School.” In the 1980s, the state of Arizona sued to shut them down because neither Blanche nor Matthew had any formal training or license to run the school. It sounds like they didn’t keep up with accepted practice between 1938 (when the Fairview School was founded) and 1980. Jacqueline Joy LARNER (Jakki SENCER) recalls Beverly Barbara WEISSMAN (Beverly SENCER) feeling guilty because Phyllis died of pneumonia, and she felt that had they not put her in the facility, she wouldn’t have gotten pneumonia (which was very common in facilities).
