646Lakin, Dr. MervynDr. Mervyn Lakin passed away peacefully on September 1, 2014, after an extended illness. He was 80 years old. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lorraine Seskind Lakin; his three loving sons and their wives, Harry (Carol), Dr. Douglas (Brigid), and Martin (Rachel); and seven grandchildren, Sam, Carlie, Brian, Brett, Eric, Sydney, and Mallory. Dr. Lakin was born in London, Ontario, and later moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he began his medical practice specializing in Internal Medicine. In 1975, Dr. Lakin and family moved to Paradise Valley, AZ, where he started a new medical practice. Truly an exceptional physician, he cared for his patients with unusual aplomb. His unique intellect and personality made him the ultimate “physician’s physician.”
Active in civic and political arenas, Dr. Lakin was particularly involved in the cause of Education. In Michigan, he served as the Southfield School Board’s President and on the Oakland Community College board. Additionally, he served on the Southfield Arts Council. For his dedication, he was honored as the “First Citizen of Southfield” and was awarded a key to the city. He served on the Boards of the Phoenix Symphony, Kivel Nursing Home, The Arizona Cancer Center, and Camel Bank in Arizona. He was a member of and enjoyed The FBI Citizens Academy. In addition, he helped found AIPAC of Arizona. Later, he founded and ran an extraordinary group known as Wise Guise II. A particular interest and luncheon speaker group, Wise Guise, remains a group of men and women interested in topical subjects. Meeting every Friday, this group has hosted the likes of John McCain, Sandra Day O’Connor, Michael Crow, and renowned experts in their fields as varied as Meteorology, International Terrorism, and Oil and Gas Exploration, among others. Respected by Presidents to patients and all in-between, his life was truly well spent. Services have been held. Anyone interested in donating to his honor may do so to Hospice of the Valley or the ASPCA.
