A 14-year-old girl was killed Thursday after her foot got caught in a Chicago Transit Authority bus door, and she was dragged and then ran over, police said.
Camilla Heather Burke of 2601 W. Jarlath St. was boarding a southbound Western Avenue bus in the 5300 block of North Western Avenue at about 7:30 a.m. when the accident occurred, said Officer James Viola of the Police Department’s major accidents unit.
Camilla, a freshman at Lane Technical High School, had been driven to the bus stop by her father.
Viola said the girl’s foot was caught in the door as it closed, and she fell backward. The bus then pulled away, and the girl was dragged, then run over by the bus.
The bus driver, Byung Choi, was unaware of what was happening until passengers told him, and he stopped the bus, said Viola. Choi, 35, was charged with negligent driving.
CTA spokesman Bill Utter said, “The CTA is devastated and deeply concerned by what happened. Since the beginning of the incident, the CTA has been cooperating with the Chicago police investigation and conducting an investigation of our own. We await the results of those investigations.”
Utter said that Choi began working for the CTA in August 1978.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Piser Weinstein Menorah Chapel, 3019 W. Peterson Ave. Camilla is survived by her parents, David, and Shirley Burke.
