DR. GLORIANNE ENGEL Dr. Glorianne Engel, born in Chicago on February 1, 1940, passed away Friday, October 24, 2003, after a long and courageous fight against diabetes. She is survived by her sister, Dr. Annette Engel, nieces Shari Bayomi and Stacy (Tom) Iveson, and grandnephews Nader Bayomi and Jared Iveson. Her sister Rosalie and brother Sheldon preceded her in death. Glorianne moved to Phoenix in 1945. After graduating from North High School, she received a BFA in Theater from the University of Arizona. Her MFA in Technical Theater and Ph.D. in Theater History and Dramatic Criticism were earned at the University of Pittsburgh. After teaching at the University of Pittsburgh and at Drake University, Glorianne returned to Arizona in 1981 as Associate Professor of Theater at Arizona State University. Glorianne had an intense passion for theater. She designed, directed, or performed in 86 plays, and received numerous awards for her college productions. As a founding member of Actor's Theatre in Phoenix, she created Writer's Circle, a forum for professional playwrights to develop new plays. Known for her theatrical scholarship and knowledge of the works of Shakespeare, Dr. Engel was frequently asked to critique college theater textbooks prior to publishing. Always active in theater funding projects, Glorianne developed a summer program for gifted underprivileged children in Phoenix. She had a lifelong interest in working to support charitable organizations. She taught Sunday school at Temple Beth Israel, loved Jewish literature and Jewish theater. She enjoyed watching pro baseball and college softball. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, October 27 at Sinai Mortuary, 4538 North 16th Street in Phoenix, with burial to follow at Temple Beth Israel Cemetery, 305 South 35th Avenue in Phoenix.
