Rita Friendly KaufmanDURHAM — Rita Friendly Kaufman, a co-founding member of Judea Reform Congregation and Durham resident from 1960 to 1967, died June 7, 2006, at age 87, at the family home in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Mrs. Kaufman moved to Durham from Cleveland when her husband became a professor of pathology at the Duke Medical School. While in Durham, she volunteered at Duke Hospital, was a member of Hadassah, and supported integration efforts. She later lived in Augusta, Ga., as well as Kingston.
The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Tompkins Funeral Home in Kingston.
Surviving are her husband of 59 years, Nathan; children Naomi, Michael, Miriam, Hannah, and Judith; nine grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia.
Memorials may be made to Judea Reform Congregation, Durham.
