Marjem; Last name: ZENTNER):
On the 15th and 26th of February 1941, two deportation transports with 2,003 Jewish men, women, and children left the Vienna Aspangbahnhof with the destination Opole, a small town south of Lublin. Opole had a traditional Jewish community; at the beginning of the war, approximately 4,000 Jews lived there, corresponding to a Jewish population share of almost 70 percent, a proportion that increased further after the war started due to forced resettlers from other parts of Poland.
Until March 1941, approx. 8,000 Jews were deported to the ghetto now built in Opole. The new arrivals were accommodated partly with local Jews, partly in mass quarters such as a synagogue and newly built barracks.
In the ghetto, the freedom of movement of the inmates was not restricted; there were no barriers, but leaving Opoles without official permission was prohibited with severe punishment. The control of the ghetto was taken over by the security service of the SS (SD), gendarmerie, and, according to witnesses, also German Wehrmacht members. When making a living, the ghetto residents were essentially dependent on themselves. From May 1941, about 800 working men were employed for forced labor in Dęblin.
Already in the spring of 1942, the liquidation of the ghetto of Opole began. On the 31st of March 1942, a transport went to the Belzec extermination camp, and in May and October 1942, deportations to the Sobibor extermination camp followed.
Of the 2,003 Viennese Jews, 28 survivors are known.
