2234Florence PurnellDES MOINES -Florence Purnell, 82, passed peacefully on the night of February 24, 2022, in Des Moines, IA.
Florence was born July 26th, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, to Irving Shanbrom and Rose (Hurwitz) Shanbrom. She lived in Des Moines for over 60 years with her husband of 64 years, Dr. Glenn Purnell. Florence was a loving and devoted mother to Michael, Rebecca, and Rob and a doting Nana to Conner, Jonas, Roxie, and countless canine grandkids.
Raising children in the 1960s and ‘70s was a full-time endeavor, but Florence found time for more. She was a competitive tennis player, served her Jewish community and many other charities, and loved traveling the globe’s far reaches with Glenn. She started her nursing career but found her lifelong passion in the culinary arts. This pursuit took her to cooking school in France, cultivating an extensive wine cellar, developing an exclusive catering business, and ultimately to a cooking school. Florence wrote and published her recipes for friends, family, and students.
She wrote the recipe for a long, richly textured life. There were many celebrations among family and friends, good food, and wine. There were also profound moments when her insight and intuition made her a beacon for those who needed advice or to receive her forthright wisdom. Later, she continued to express herself in the kitchen but increasingly turned to spending time with her children and grandchildren and relaxing in Arizona during Iowa winters. The last few years were spent in Des Moines, amongst familiar surroundings, and with Glenn's ultimate devotion.
Services will be held graveside at Woodland Cemetery on Thursday, March 3rd, at 1 p.m. They will be followed by a celebration of life at Temple B'nai Jeshurun, where we will share a fine glass of wine to honor her memory and rich, inspired, impactful life.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Food Bank of Iowa or Temple B'nai Jeshurun.
