Dr. Helaine K. Minkus, Associate Professor,
Dept of Geography and Anthropology. Japanese Culture.
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire
Helaine Minkus was born in Chicago, IL, on November 28, 1943. She had a great interest in learning about cultures around the world. She spent two years living in the village of Akropang, Ghana, where she learned the Twi language and the traditions of the Ghanaian people as a part of her Ph.D. dissertation in Cultural Anthropology. She completed this degree in 1974 at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She then got a job as a professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin in Eau Claire, where she enjoyed teaching until she retired.
With Eau Claire as her home base, she traveled out to various countries over the years, including Japan, Israel, Albania, and Brazil. Many international students lived with her in her home, and she hosted many international events.
Her Jewish heritage was important to her, and she spent 13 years as the president of Temple Sholom synagogue in Eau Claire. An invitation to one of Helaine's Passover Seders was always a special treat.
After retirement, she embarked on yet another adventure. She moved to Charleston, SC, where she enjoyed exploring the city, starting an international club, doing yoga on the beach, teaching English to international students, becoming an active member of Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim synagogue, and meeting new friends.
She is survived by her mother, Selma Minkus, many cousins, and many friends here and around the world who are like family.
The service and burial will be held on Tuesday, July 21st, at 10 am at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Synagogue in Charleston, SC.
