JOEL DAVID KLEIN

AGE: 71 • WEST CHESTER, PA

Joel David Klein, 71, of West Chester, PA, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014, at Chester County Hospital in West Chester. He was the husband of Shirley Horlick Klein. Born in Darby, PA, he was the son of the late Raymond Klein and Alice Drossner Klein. Dr. Klein grew up in Philadelphia. He attended Overbrook High School and the University of Pennsylvania as an undergraduate and received his medical degree from Hahnemann. His internship was at Presbyterian (University of Pennsylvania) Medical Center, and he took his Pediatric residency at UCLA/Harbor General Hospital. From 1971 to 1973, he was Chief of Pediatrics at George Air Force Base Hospital. Dr. Klein did a research fellowship in Pediatrics Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina, finishing in 1975.

In 1980, he established a private Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases practice in Chadds Ford. He joined the medical staff of the Medical Center of Delaware and Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children, where he was widely respected for his expertise in Infectious Diseases. He was the long-time Chief of I.D. at DuPont and rose to the rank of Professor of Pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College.

Dr. Klein was known for his amazing fount of knowledge, quick wit, and sense of humor. He enjoyed following the University of Pennsylvania Basketball team, the Ivy League, and the Phillies. Dr. Klein was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling and photography.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Joshua Klein (Alma); daughter, Bethany Klein; grandchildren, Zoe and Ada. He is also survived by a brother, Arthur Klein (Nancy).

Relatives and Friends are invited to his Graveside Service at 2:00 pm Friday, Aug. 8, 2014, at Haym Salomon Memorial Park, 200 Moores Road, Frazer, PA.

Klein-Horlick

TORRANCE — Dr. and Mrs. Reuben S. Horlick, Arlington, Va., have announced the engagement of their daughter, Shirley, to Joel Klein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Klein, Yeadon, Penn. Both have received doctorate degrees in medicine and are completing their residency training in pediatrics at Harbor General Hospital.
