Lit cigarette kills sleeping Queens senior - FDNY.
An elderly man died in a fire at a Queens retirement home yesterday after he fell asleep in a chair smoking a cigarette, authorities said.
Hyman Mittman, 88, was found dead by firefighters just before 5 a.m. after they burst into his smoke-filled apartment at the Flushing House Senior Retirement Residence, police and fire officials said.
About 60 firefighters got the fire under control by 5:20 a.m. Officials said the flames were confined to Mittman’s seventh-floor apartment.
Authorities said Mittman was discovered sitting in a chair where he was smoking, which is what fire marshals believe sparked the two-alarm blaze. Officials noted that Mittman lived at the 12-story building on Bowne St. for the past two years.
The Flushing House, owned by a group of Presbyterian churches, is a 310-unit independent living facility for seniors.
