Vita Karpes, 83; was involved in interfaith work
PATERSON Vita (Milstein) Karpes, awarded for her outstanding interfaith endeavors, died Monday, June 17, at home. She was 83.
She was born in Russia and came to the United States 79 years ago, settling in Albany, N.Y. She moved to Philadelphia, Pa., where she lived until relocating to Paterson 54 years ago.
Mrs. Karpes had been engaged in social work for agencies in Philadelphia and New York City. She also was an assistant to her husband in his dental practice in Paterson and was a children's librarian at the Philadelphia Free Public Library.
She was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Karpes received an award for outstanding service in interfaith work. She was a lifelong member of the Hadassah and B'nai B'rith Woman's League in Paterson.
She also was a member of the Paterson Chapter of ORT and the Elmwood Park Jewish Center, where she was co-editor of its publication, The Meillah, for the past year.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Benjamin B. Karpes; three daughters, Joan English of Raleigh, N.C., Ruth of New York City, and Simone Horenstein of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.
Arrangements are by Louis Suburban Chapel, 13-01 Broadway, Fair Lawn.
