Obituaries
From Mark Selko Obituary - Beverly Hills, California - Smart Cremation:

Mark Selko was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 9, 1918. Son of Louis Selko and Rose Levin. He was brother to Denise Kerbel Sherman, Hilda Siegel, Shirley Gottsagen, and the late Soll Selko.

Mark entered Johns Hopkins University at the age of 16. He graduated “Phi Beta Kappa” at age 18, having tutored upperclassmen in math all three years at Hopkins.

He came to California in 1949, where he met and married his wife, Jewel (aka Bunny). They remained lovingly married for 70 years until her passing in 2017.

Mark served as a Warrant Officer in WW II and was stationed in the S. Pacific.

Mark was called back into the Army in 1951 for the Korean War. He served as a recruiting officer.

Mark and Bunny began their joint work as apartment house developers after the conclusion of the Korean War. Their company’s name, Markwell Construction, a combination of their names, demonstrated the depth of their partnership. Bunny designed each apartment, and Mark built it.

They designed and built both of the homes in Beverly Hills, where they lived for a total of 65 years.

Mark and Bunny began traveling the world in the early 1950s and never stopped. They were deeply engaged in public policy matters and were early members of Ronald Reagan’s California Brain Trust. Mark supported the foundations of conservative/libertarian think tanks in California and Washington, DC. By the early 1980s, Mark had developed close ties with the free-market-oriented Chinese political leadership surrounding Deng Xiaoping.

Until the end of his life, Mark remained deeply committed to his virtues, values, ethics, and love for human nature. He was a brilliant man who loved and lived life to the fullest. He educated many of us and continued to demonstrate by his actions the persons we want to strive to be, for we respected him so highly. If he were your friend, you would be blessed with his values and loyalty.

He has touched so many of our lives and will be deeply missed. We love you, Mark, forever.
